The Assumption Cathedral erected in the territory of Kiev-Pechery
Lavra poses the main monastery temple. It was built by Russian
architect in 1073-1078. Originally the Assumption Cathedral
posed 3-aisled 6-pillared one-cross-domed building. According
to the chronicle the great painter of Ancient Rus Alimpiy and
Gregory took part in painting of the interior of cathedral.
During the incursions of the 13-14th centuries the temple has
been destroyed many times but it was rebuilt again. Giving evidences
about changes and rebuilding of the Assumption Cathedral the
plates of 1661 and 1693 were preserved. The Assumption Cathedral
has been used as shrine for Kiev princes, Lithuanian, Ukrainian
and then Russian magnates since ancient times. During the times
of soviet reign the Assumption Cathedral was turned to the museum
broken in November of 1941 during the occupation of Kiev. Present
figure of the Assumption Cathedral was renewed in early 90s.
Nowadays the works dealing with inner decoration of the cathedral
are being led. |
