Not many know that the first Kiev zoo was situated at first
on the territory of the botany park named after A. V. Fomin.
It was founded by the Kiev Society of Animal-fanciers in 1908.
At first this shebang was rather humble and was kept for private
voluntary subscriptions. That is why the Society of Animal-fanciers
started immediately look for special territory. Such place was
found in the present Victory Square. A big territory of waste
ground was situated bang opposite the building of the Kiev Polytechnic
Institute that has just been built. And the lie of the ground
was very complicated. It had a lot of ravines and hills and
so was unusable for building of real-estates. House-warming
of the new zoo took place in 1913 on the eve of the beginning
of the World War. The territory has not been refined in proper
way yet; in general small aviaries, cages and fenced meres have
already been built. Modern Kiev zoo is one of the biggest ones
in the country. The complexity of the relief was successfully
used that allowed to place the exposition together with places
of entertainment for children in compact way. |
